The X-15 is widely regarded as the fastest aircraft ever built and still holds the official world record for the highest speed ever reached by an aircraft. This video follows the development of the X-15 program is flying at very high altitudes, exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (300,000 feet), at Mach 6.72, thus qualifying the pilots for astronaut status, since they were technically in space. One of the most successful experimental projects which lead NASA to the moon in 1969.
