U.S. Navy Testing • Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System

Load testing of the The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) aboard the future aircraft carrier PCU Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78). The EMALS will replace traditional steam catapult launching systems on the Ford (still under consruction) and all future U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. This new technology uses stored kinetic energy and solid-state electrical power conversion which permits a high degree of computer control, monitoring, and automation. The system will be capable of launching all current and future carrier air wing aircraft. EMALS delivers: • Higher launch energy capacity • Substantial improvements in system weight, volume, and maintenance • Increased reliability and efficiency • More accurate end-speed control. Filmed on June 15-16, 2015.
